Proverbs 1 & 2 -- Perfect timing for starting a new year

Wisdom involves saying no a thousand times every day
The key verse here for me has always been "Knowledge begins with respect for the Lord."  Why would someone find that so irrational, anyway?  After all, God's commandments and warning are for our good, not for God's.  My commentary says, "God never gives us a commandment because He is arbitrary or because He doesn't want us to have fun."
In fact, part of the process of acquiring wisdom involves "having the courage to say "no" a thousand times a week."  That develops backbone in us.  It's easy to say yes.  It's an exercise to say no.
My commentary also noted that "Every man in free to make his own choices in life, but he  is not free to choose the consequences of his choices."  That's where most people mess up, thinking wrongly that the can choose their consequences...almost like they are a special case.
The sidebar of my Bible said, "Wisdom is the God-given ability to 1) see life with rare objectivity and 2) to handle life with rare stability."
Whether we're on a high or a low, "we can cope with both extremes.  His wisdom provides us the necessary objectivity and stability.  That's the way life is lived in the palm of His hand .... the secret is making right choices every day,"  -- learning to say no a thousand times a day.
Father, I know this all too well, and I've found that I always end up bashing myself for my stupidity when I've failed to say no just one time!  Help me to see that saying "no" doesn't deny me something, but instead it builds character and backbone and wisdom.
Your Brother In Christ,
Gary Ford
