Genesis 31 -- "OWNING" God

At this point in Jacob's life, I'm still not convinced that he'd bought in fully to God's sovereignty and His worthiness of worship. Yes, he hears God say, "Go back ... and I'll be with you," but some of Jacob's references to God never relay any thought of personal commitment:
"The God of my father has been with me...."
"But the God of my father ... was with me...."
"So Jacob made a promise in the name of the God whom his father Isaac worshiped..."
My commentary even noted that in the last verse quoted, the actual language was, "Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac."
True, he does not many time how God has protected him from Laban's treachery. But Jacob's conditional promise, based on God's performance seems to have yet been fulfilled, for there's no record yet that Jacob tithed 10% of his animals as he had promised once he saw that God had performed his part of the promise.
My commentary brought up a very interesting list of principles for discerning God's guidance, by Griffith Thomas:
First, Jacob had a desire (30:25)
Secondly, circumstances necessitated a change of some sort.
Thirdly, God's word came strongly to him.
Finally, there was confirming support from his wives, despite their natural ties to Laban.
Father, I am so glad that I don't call You "the God of my father", but that You are MY God. You have shown Yourself to me. You've protected me, sought me out, and guided me. You've given me a great reward with my sons. Thank You for loving me so and for calling me "friend". I don't deserve it at all, but I eagerly take hold of You. Help me to never let go. Grant me discernment to be able to understand Your will for my life every day.
Your Brother In Christ,
Gary Ford
