Paul would have made a great attorney. Though what he says here is the start of the book of Ephesians, it would make the perfect jury summation, giving all the proof we'd need to know that we as Christians are ransomed, forgiven, adopted, and heirs with Christ.
And just like the peace that's felt when a long court battle has finally come to a conclusion, Paul lets us know that God wants us to be at peace with our standing before Him.
My commentary said, "Peace means a spirit at REST in ALL the changing circumstances of life. The saints had already experienced peace with God when they were converted. But day by day they needed the peace of God, that is, the calm settled repose that is independent of circumstances and that results from taking everything to God in prayer."
Father, thank You for giving me peace years ago about my standing before You. I thank You also for the daily supply of peace You give me, despite what's happening in the world around me. I especially ask for peace this morning and for all the mornings to come, for Karen Parsons. Father, more than ever, she is relying on Your faithfulness and desiring Your peace as she battles cancer. Please give her the full measure of it.

Paul talks about the awesome and incredible power God used to both raise Christ from the dead and ascend Him to heaven. I don't think we fully understand the vast difference between the physical and spiritual worlds. Power in the spiritual world must be at least an order of magnitude (or two) greater than the physical world, for in Genesis, God thought it, and it happened. The entire universe came into being.
Yet here my commentary says, "The New testament teaches that Christ's resurrection and ascension required the greatest outflow of divine energy. Why was this? It seems that all the hosts of hell were massed to frustrate God's purposes by keeping Christ in the tomb, or by preventing His ascension once He was raised."
2:6 says, "God raised US up with Christ and gave us a seat with Him in the heavens. I noticed those verbs are past tense. My commentary said, "Another aspect of our position is that we are seated in Him in the heavenly places in Christ. By our union with Him we are seen as already delivered from this present evil world and seated in Christ in glory. This is how God sees us. If we appropriate it by faith, it will CHANGE the CHARACTER of our lives. We will no longer be earthbound, occupied with the trivial and the transient. We will seek those things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God."
Father, it's incredible to think that, as far as You are concerned, I am already seated with Christ in heaven. Help me to realize that now. Put heaven on my mind and in my heart. Lead me to see this world from that perspective and help me not to us my finest energies on anything that's not Your will.

Verses 16-18 in chapter two really drew my attention this morning. We are all brought up to have a good sense of self-worth, which is a good thing before men, but which can often lead us to the sin of pride before God if we aren't careful. In verse 16, Paul speaks about the animosity between Jews and Gentiles, caused in some measure by the pride of the Jewish people at being God's chosen people. My commentary says, "Though Israel and the nations were normally bitterly opposed to each other, there was one sense in which they were united - in their hostility to God. The cause of this hostility was sin. By His death on the cross, the Lord Jesus removed the enmity by removing the cause ... God never needed to be reconciled to us. But we needed to be reconciled to him... Through prayer any believer can now enter the throne room of heaven, kneel before the Sovereign of the universe, and address Him as Father. Before the resurrection of Christ, men stood before God as creatures before the Creator. It was after He rose that He said, "Go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.' "
Wow! United in our hostility to God. We're something else, yet God loved us anyway. Jesus died for us, although we were unlovely, and through His death and resurrection, we can not only approach God, but we can be called His children!
Father, thank You for adopting me even though I was and am one of the least desirable children in this sin-filled orphanage we call Earth. What an incredible privilege. What an incredible Father!

Ephesians 3:14-21 A HUGE Prayer For Us As Believers

Paul packs a wallop in this prayer to the Christians at Ephesus. And as I read it this morning, it was easy to feel that he was praying it for me, too:
"I ask the Father in His great glory to give you the power to be strong inwardly through His Spirit. I pray that Christ will live in your hearts by faith and that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. And I pray that you and all God's holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ's love - how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. Christ's love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God. With God's power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything WE can ask or imagine. To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen."
My commentary says that verse 16 says in the original language, "that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory ..." According to implies in proportion to, NOT out of His riches. Paul's request is huge to us, but, as my commentary added, "Why should we ask so little of so great a King?"
Paul wants God to bless us with spiritual power. He also asks that Christ may dwell in our hearts. Although Christ indwells us when we become Christians, through the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives, my commentary says that what Paul is asking here is that Christ feels at home in our hearts. "This is a request that He might have full access to every room and closet; that He might not be grieved by sinful words, thoughts, motives, and deals; that He might enjoy unbroken fellowship with the believer."
That requires more on our part than we are probably capable of doing without the Spirit's help. Perhaps that's why Paul was led to include the words of verse 20 in his prayer, that with God's power working in us, He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above ALL that we could ever ask or imagine." Not just able to do what we ask or imagine, but exceedingly, abundantly more.
Father, help me never to short-change Your ability to empower my life spiritually. As John Newton wrote, "Thou art coming to a King, Large petitions with thee bring; For His grace and power are such, None can ever ask too much." Father, help me to open every room and closet of my heart to You, and to make You feel welcome in residing with me. I pray that You will clean out any areas I've neglected.

I couldn't help but think about the main topic for our upcoming Disciple Now - becoming the man (or woman) God intends us to be - as I read the 2nd and 3rd verses of this chapter: "God chose you to be His people, so I urge you now to live the life to which God called you."
How crazy it is that we don't concentrate on developing in our kids the ability to hear God and to discern what He's telling them about such a life. Instead, mainly because of the way our society is structured, the state mandates how and what they must learn in an attempt, I suppose, to make them well-rounded enough to be able to choose what suits their interests rather than directing them into the spot God has developed for them.
Paul also mentions four personality foundations that are essential for Christians, because they are like Christ's, yet which in many ways are opposite of what we develop in our kids:
Father, I'm not past the point of developing these traits in myself or in my boys. It seems to be a lifelong job. Please give us the ability to discern just how You've created each one of us, and lead us to fulfill Your plan for our lives by living the life to which You've called us.

- 4) Bearing with one another in love - "that is, making allowances for the faults and failures of others, or differing personalities, abilities, and temperaments," my commentary says. It's not defined as tolerance, I noted.

My Bible calls this section, "The Way You Should Live" and my commentary calls it, "Appeal For A New Morality". The things we are urged to do or not do here as part of our new life in Christ can also serve as warning flags about the other side of life, too. I thought about what this section would mean to an unbeliever. I could just hear him saying about Christianity:
"I don't understand half of that mumbo-jumbo they're always spouting off. I'm really tired of listening to it. I'm not worried about anybody finding out what I do. In fact, I'm proud of it. Big deal! I'm having fun and enjoying life. In fact, I may just try a few more things people have been telling me about. After all, the old stuff can get kinda boring after awhile, you know? And so what if I tell some lies? It's better than hurting someone's feelings. And heck, yeah, I get mad. And I get even, too! Anybody that does to me is gonna get the same back. Don't be talking to me about the little stuff either. You call surfin' at work stealing. Heck they're not paying me enough anyway! I'm just trying to make up the difference."
Man, that sounds like the world! These verses say, "Don't continue living like this ... What you learned in Christ is not like this ... leave your old self - stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self just becomes worse, because people are fooled by the evil things they want to do. But you were taught to be made new in your hearts, to become a new person. That new person is made to like God..."
Father, I'm glad that You made me into a new person. I hate it that my life once so closely resembled what I wrote above. And I still hate it when I stupidly and foolishly buy the lie from Satan and end up feeling worthless. Thank You for Your forgiveness and Your grace.

There is so much here about what Christians aren't supposed to be doing that I found myself feeling almost beaten down, and I don't really think that was what God was intending for Paul to convey. Then I hit verses 15-17:
"So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely. Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times. So do not be foolish, but learn what the Lord WANTS you to do."
Then my commentary nailed it:
"Because of the abounding evil and the shortness of time, we might be tempted to spend our days in frantic and feverish activity of our own choosing. But this would amount to nothing but wasted energy. The important thing is to find out God's will for us each day and DO IT. This is the only way to be efficient and effective. It is all too possible to carry on Christian work according to our own ideas and in our own strength, and be completely out of the will of the Lord. The path of wisdom is to discern God's will for our individual lives, then to obey it to the hilt."
Imagine, each day, discerning God's will for that day and doing it, rather than taking care of all the busy work that seems to clutter our lives and in the end is of little consequence. That would result in a life of purpose - a fulfilled life.
Father, help me to strive for this each day in my life. I need Your help to discern correctly and then to obey.

It's so tempting to simply look at these verses from the husband's point of view, since naturally that's what I would be. But the words "as" and "like" showed up a lot in these verses, and caught my attention:
"Wives, yield to your husbands, as you do to the Lord ... the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church ... As the church yields to Christ, so you wives should yield to your husband in everything. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it ... He died so that He could give the church to Himself like a bride in all her beauty ... husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies ... each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself."
We are to look at what follows each "as" or "like" and determine that we will do the same. As Christians, we are members of the church, which is the bride of Christ, and therefore we men are actually brides of Christ as the church is. I'd never thought about being a bride before. Considering the husband to be Christ, it would therefore follow that my duty as a bride is to yield to Him, acknowledge Him as the Head, know that He sees me as beautiful and loves me. He died to give me to Himself, and He loved Himself by loving me that much. I am to respect him as the Head of my life.
Father, that's a different side of the coin today. We guys aren't used to seeing ourselves in that light, I think, but it shows so well how loved by You and Your Son we should fee. Help me to yield to You and accept the love and care You show to me. Help me to better realize my position before You. Thanks for loving me so much!

I tried to look at the first 4 verses through the eyes of my boys. "Obey your parents ..." probably has a negative connotation at their ages, as they struggle to define who they are as individuals. "... as the Lord wants" helps serve to override the rebellion mentality, because they can't argue against God. I'm sure there are times they'd like to rub verse 4 in my face: "Fathers, do not make your children angry ..." , and if they do, I admit that I may have done that, but then I ask them about the verse that says, "Do not cause your brother to sin." In families, we each must work for unity 100% of the time.
I'd always looked at verse 5-9 through the slave's or servant's eyes, but again, God said, "See the other side." In my position at work now, that's good advice. "Servants, obey ... with fear and respect and from a sincere heart, just as you obey Christ." That last phrase tells me that my employees should see Christ, and not some ogre, when they look at me. It's also a good admonition that they are told to do what God wants, as people who are obeying Christ. That assures good results and no reprimands.
And words for bosses today, too: "Masters, in the same way, be good to your slaves/servants/employees. Do not threaten them ..." It goes on to say that we all have the same true Master in heaven. So in reality, we are all working together for Him.
Father, help me in my role as father at home and boss at work. Let my kids and my coworkers see Christ through me, and not anyone else.

We don't become Christians and then no longer have to worry about the devil. Instead, as my commentary says, "The more effective a believer is for the Lord, the more he will experience the savage attacks of the enemy: the devil does not waste his ammunition on nominal Christians." If we fail to recognize that the day we accepted Christ into our hearts the devil drew a target on our backs, then we are naïve.
That's why Paul gave us the wise counsel to armor up for the fight. "It is necessary to be completely armed - one or two pieces will not do," my commentary said. "The devil has various stratagems - discouragement, frustration, confusion, moral failure, and doctrinal error. He knows our weakest point and aims for it. If he cannot disable us by one method, he will try for another." Recognize any of these attacks in your own life?
Paul said our armor consists of:
My commentary also mentioned "the atmosphere in which the soldier must live and breathe ... the spirit in which he must don the armor and face the foe - prayer that is continual and not sporadic, inspired and led by the Spirit."
We should walk out of our homes each day with our armor on, hyper-vigilant for the devil's presence around us, and expecting his attacks, surrounded by the atmosphere of prayer, if we are to be successful in thwarting his attacks on us. Otherwise, we'll find ourselves victims of the meanest terrorist of them all.
Father, thanks for reminding me that I'm in battle all the time. Thanks for the reconnaissance showing me Satan's weapons. Remind me constantly to check my armor and my connection to You.

Paul said our armor consists of:
- 1) The truth of God's word, applied in our daily lives.
- 2) The righteousness of God, which we must manifest in our personal lives in integrity and uprightness.
- 3) The gospel of peace, suggesting a readiness to go out and invade enemy territory, not relax in our tents.
- 4) Our faith - our firm confidence in the Lord and His word, which helps us to look up during the battle and say, "I believe God."
- 5) Our salvation, because we know the end of the story - God wins and we're with Him.
- 6) And our only offensive weapon - the sword of the Spirit - the word of God - given appropriately to us for each occasion.
My commentary also mentioned "the atmosphere in which the soldier must live and breathe ... the spirit in which he must don the armor and face the foe - prayer that is continual and not sporadic, inspired and led by the Spirit."
