Moab hadn’t helped Judah or Israel. Moab had in fact been an enemy. And being against God’s people put them in a precarious position with God Himself. Of course, their sin hadn’t helped, either. In these two chapters, God enumerates through Isaiah the hardships that would come upon Moab for its treachery and sinfulness.
But the most amazing thing is that God’s love, even for sinners, wins out! You can hear His mercy and grace in His voice:
“My heart cries with sorrow for Moab … I, the Lord, will bring even more troubles … I cry with the people … I will cry with the people … There will be no shouts of joy … because I have put an end to shouts of joy … My heart cries for Moab … I am very sad for [them].”
That tells me so much about my God. He reaches out in love to discipline even those who do not love Him. He wants to draw them to Himself, to change their hearts and lives. Having to apply discipline hurts Him. Yet He loves us all too much to leave us the way we are. He desires so much more for us, if only we will listen and let Him be God.
Father, I’m amazed at Your steadfast love for me. Even when I know better, I sin and yet You still love me! So amazing! Thank You for caring so much for me that You sent Your Son to die for me! Help me every day to live for You and not for myself. I’ve caused You enough pain.
Your Brother In Christ,
Gary Ford
