Solomon again talks about sexual sin, and my commentary had
an excellent answer to those who would argue that sex is a normal desire, given
by God, and we have every right to use it, even if we’re not married. They liken the sex drive to hunger – when the
desire arises, then satisfy it. “Paul made it clear that the believer’s body
belongs to God and that the presence of a desire isn’t the same as the privilege
to SATISFY that desire.”
Solomon lists seven things in verses 16-19 that God can’t stand, and I liked what I read in the
Believer’s Bible Commentary about some of them:
-
A proud
look is dust deifying itself.
-
A lying
tongue is doing exactly the opposite of what it was made for – glorifying God, not lying
-
Someone
who starts arguments among families – God
ranks those who cause divisions among
brethren with murderers
Speaking of adultery again,
Solomon warned – “You can’t carry hot coals against your chest without burning
your clothes.” That’s a vivid word
picture we need to remember any time we are tempted to lust.
Finally, in my Bible’s
sidebar, for those already engaged in sexual sin, I read: “It is
NEVER too late to say no. The
freedom offered in Christ is that we can
say no, and when we say it, there
comes the opposite resounding YES! And out of that yes God builds a life more
beautiful, more complete, more satisfying than anything that we could ever create for
ourselves. He wants that for each of
us.”
Father, we so need Your wisdom regarding sexual sin, because the sex drive is
so powerful and because we have that war within us between the flesh and the
spirit. Shout this out loudly,
Father. Help us to hear You when Satan’s whispers turn into
shouts.
Your Brother In Christ,
Gary Ford
